In my humble opinion, we have lots of people teaching good courses on HOW to use a defensive firearm, but damn few who are teaching the critical element of WHEN to use one. We need more instructors who are fully informed in this area.

We’ll be doing a Deadly Force Instructor course this coming July at the Firearms Academy of Seattle. Details here. Learn more about it here.

  1. When Mas was young, there were no books teaching crime victims who practiced self-defense how to defend themselves against prosecutors in court. That’s because prosecutors went after criminals in those days, not honest citizens trying to preserve life and limb.

    • My father was a prosecutor in rural Ohio, 1950’s. He often said he would prosecute a dead cow or a fencepost if he thought he could get a conviction. He was elected to prosecute, he said, not to exonerate. A police officer visited our home to plead leniency for a fellow the officer had arrested. Dad refused, and the accused was indicted and tried. As I recall, the verdict was not guilty, and Dad was an angry fellow. One of the many reasons I did not go into the law profession.

      • Thanks for sharing that, James M. Sounds like your Dad was ahead of his time. Prosecutors make a steady salary no matter what they do. I believe their job is to see that justice is done. I guess I am old-fashioned.

I should have become a lawyer, but legalese is such a turnoff.

  2. For anyone on the fence about this class…..

    TAKE IT!!!

It was one of the most difficult things I’ve done since law school. It was a grind of a week with long days and dense material.

Worth every single second. Worth every single penny. It made me a better instructor and equipped me in ways I never imagined.

And who knew that Wilford Brimley would be such an important part of the class? HAHAHA.

I really and truly enjoyed every second of it. It just saddens me that my friend Art is no longer with us.

  3. You are SO right! That’s what I loved about Mas’ courses. He spent as much time training the mind as training the body!!!!!!!

  4. I concur completely with DB – A long week but outstanding value for the money. If you teach a concealed carry class anywhere or are a criminal defense attorney, you need to take this class!

  5. I was in the class back in March and found it to be the most informative and intense course that I have taken. Mas is an outstanding instructor and has the ability (that few have) to present the material in a manner that is understandable. I have taken these lessons and incorporated them into the classes that I teach for the benefits of my students.
    THANKS MASS!

  6. Now if Mas would just teach the course at MY end of the country:) It occurs to me that this would likely be an effective, if expensive, way to evade jury duty-but that isn’t why I’d take it.
