Dorner receives sympathy in part because the LAPD has a long history of abuse of power. They lost my trust with their policy of legal theft of guns and their refusal to follow court orders to follow the law in the issuance of California CCW permits.

When a major police agency engages in an official policy of legalized theft and refuses to follow court orders over a period of 17 years and more, (both practices now being challenged in court, again) they have lost credibility on nearly everything.

As a resident of Colorado I’m hoping you’ll have some thoughts regarding the proposed legislation recently passed in the CO House of Representatives and heading to the Senate.

I have said for some time that the news channels are more propaganda than news. The fact that the media was still digging into lanzas life 2 1/2 months later to report that he wanted to inflict greater harm than another mass killer is no surprise. It won’t be much of a surprise either when another one of these spree killers conveniently pops up just before the proposed federal laws are put before congress to vote on.

Yep there are a lot of sick puppies out there. Let’s assume Former was wronged by the “system”. He was never shot, incarcerated on a life sentence or other vile means of retribution against his “whistle blowing”. He then waited 4 years te exact revenge on those that he perceived did him wrong by drawing first blood and even executing those that weren’t even around at the time of his said “persecution”. The media and the politicians have us surrounded. A constant barrage of anti-gun propaganda. Even the death of Mindy McCready was a chance to blame guns. Daily stories in the newspapers are now the norm.

Even Bloomberg is spending $2 million to prevent a mildly pro-gun candidate
from being elected to Jackson Jr. congressional seat. Since the feds are warming up a cell for Jr.

So what is the solution?

This is the truth of the matter. Unfortunately, mass-media outlets thrive on horror (“if it bleeds, it leads”), so they have a vested interest in glorifying these killers. Doing so improves ratings, and makes money. Lots of money. Of course, this plays right into the hands of the gunn-banners’ agenda.

In the interim, other killers, seeking glory and imagining themselves outdoing all of the previous killers that have been made folk heroes by the media, plan their own attacks.

In m view, these people should never be mentioned by name, but rather portrayed as the slavering, bottom-feeding cowards they are, and kept anonymous for all time, to dissuade others in the future.

“Think of the children”…”if it saves one life”…gives those phrases a different take, doesn’t it?

The cops did what they had to do. This guy killed four people. He’s not a hero …. he was a murderer.

My only comment is that while I think Dorner was completely in the wrong. The stuff he talks about in his manifesto is a problem. The behavior of the cops shooting up vehicles with out being aware of their targets is unacceptable behavior. Discussing lighting the house on fire on the radio is not due process. The police were completely out of control. and that is not acceptable behavior either.

I found it interesting that our vice believes that the safest way to defend your home from an intruder is to empty your weapon into a random direction. I wonder if he is aware of the possibility of shooting an innocent bystander and being charged with man-slaughter? Our leaders know nothing about safe gun handling, they know nothing about personal or home defense. They know nothing of the personal responsibility involved in carrying a concealed fire-arm. My two cents: Minute by minute the rights of lawful gun owners and the 2nd amendment of the constitution are being attacked and eliminated state by state. Something I wish someone would write up and bring national attention to was that it was the Brady bunch and their pimps in the media who made military-looking guns sexy.

Think back to the 1970’s for example. AR15’s, AR180’s, FN-FAL’s, AK’s, BM59’s, Galils, etc., were all on the market. Only people interested in them were collectors, hobbyists, high power rifle competitors. Then in the late 1980’s the gun grabers changed tactics: instead of going after “Saturday night specials” (the proposed laws always targeting not just the die cast guns but S&W model 10’s and that sort of thing–they always morphed into de facto handgun bans) they needed a new target. HCI stated that since the general public didn’t know the difference between an M16 and an AR15, they’d go after AR15’s implying they were machine guns. They just wanted to ban something. Until the pimps in the media created the “assault rifle crisis” they were scarcely ever used in crimes. And until the American people were threatened with bans, they were not that popular.

In short, HCI and the media propagandists made it sexy to go on spree shooting with semi auto rifles.

I actually agree with Joe Biden. A shotgun is excellent for home defense, although you better be able to reload a double-barreled shotgun as fast as a Cowboy Action Shooter. Two shots might not be enough. I’m glad I have a Mossberg 590; holds nine shotshells!

Again I agree with Joe Biden about rifles. A rifle is not ideal for home defense. I would not use my M1 Garand for home defense, because the bullet would go through the bad guy, through a wall, into a neighbor’s house, and then who knows where it would stop? We need rifles in order to combat a tyrannical government. Mark Levin says we are in a soft tyranny right now. I’ll give Joe credit for naming the black rifle correctly. I’m just waiting for one of these dingbats to talk about AR-47s and AK-15s. Ha Ha!

Dave, thanks for sharing the op-ed piece. Some very pertinent points:

1. The problem of unsecured guns, the main source of gun tragedy, is a shared problem in the pro-gun community;

2. Firearms should be locked up when not in use, which prevents theft, unauthorized use by mentally ill folks, unauthorized use by untrained children, or use during a fit of rage during an argument or other emotional time;

3. People who choose to buy firearms for their use should undergo training on the proper use and storage of their firearm;

4. If we, the pro-gun population, don’t police ourselves, then somebody will do it for us, as we’re experiencing again.

The connection between the carelessness of law-abiding gun owners and America’s still-high rate of needless gun death needs to be acknowledged by the pro-gun community.

Sure, there will be those cases like the Dorner case, but there shouldn’t be instances where folks having a mental illness or untrained kids or thieves or emotionally unstable people are able to access a firearm because it was carelessly left unstored.

Anyone who follows Mas should know that trying to employ a long gun requires 2 hands. This leaves no hand available for cell phone, door knobs, handling children, etc. If you have a well trained spouse maybe a long gun makes sense.

I keep an XDm in .45acp with a light and laser on the rail next to bed. Behind the door is a 12gauge double coach gun with a sleeve on the stock with extra buckshot and a few slugs, also have shortened the stock and added a recoil pad.
I live in the country and the nearest neighbors are 100 yds away and the others are 1/4 mi away.

Actually the neighbor’s wife has already tried out a 12 gauge on her husband. It must have been birdshot as he survived and they are still living together. Goes to show you that guns and booze don’ t go together. His back is pretty well torn up.

Biden’s recommendation of a shotgun may appear valid but he’s gone so far as to suggest a double barreled shotgun and firing two warning shots (aka negligent discharge). His push for a DB shotgun seems carefully crafted for 2 reasons:
1) the admin’s emphasis to protect the rights of (only?) the hunters: a group with a decreasing fan base
2) to avoid being seen as a hypocrite by advocating “assault” type shotguns or ones with high capacity magazines

No, it does not.

40,000 annual gun deaths out of 80 million gun owners* amounts to 0.0005% of gun owners being careless, annually. Show me where a group/organization/etc. engages in concessions and self-deprecating actions when only 0.0005% of its population does something wrong, and MAYBE I’ll give some credibility to your claim.

Bottom line- DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO. It really irritates freedom-loving people when you tell them what to do. Especially when you do so based on emotion and ignorance.

I do not agree with everything they say, but I do agree with their assessment that none of the proposed legislation will do anything to reduce violence.

Law Enforcement Targets, Inc. is a 21-year designer and full service provider of training targets for the DHS, the Justice Department and thousands of law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

The company’s website offers a line of “No More Hesitation” targets “designed to give officers the experience of dealing with deadly force shooting scenarios with subjects that are not the norm during training.” The targets are, “meant to help the transition for officers who are faced with these highly unusual targets for the first time.”

The targets include “pregnant woman threat,” “older man with shotgun,” “older man in home with shotgun,” “older woman with gun,” “young school aged girl,” “young mother on playground,” and “little boy with real gun.”

Why are top training target suppliers for the government supplying the likes of the DHS with “non-traditional threat” targets of children, pregnant women, mothers in playgrounds, and elderly American gun owners unless there is a demand for such items?

This is particularly alarming given the fact that the Department of Homeland Security has purchased roughly 2 billion rounds of ammunition over the course of the last year, enough to wage a near 30 year war.

In comparison, during the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month.

The DHS also purchased no less than 7,000 fully automatic assault rifles last September, labeling them “Personal Defense Weapons.”

The fact that targets of armed pregnant women, children, mothers in playgrounds, and American gun owners in general are being represented as “non traditional threats” “for the first time” is deeply concerning given the admitted preparations for civil unrest undertaken by Homeland Security as well as other federal agencies.

A leaked US Army Military Police training manual for “Civil Disturbance Operations” also outlines how military assets are to be used domestically to quell riots, confiscate firearms and even kill Americans on U.S. soil during mass civil unrest.

This also dovetails with the continuing characterization of Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority,” and “reverent of individual liberty” as “extreme right-wing” terrorists by DHS-funded studies.

The US military trained last year to take on another “unusual target” – zombies – which some fear is just a ruse to get troops used to engaging crowds of people with deadly force. As Alex Jones documented in his film Police State 2000, numerous “urban warfare” training drills stretching back well over a decade have revolved around incarcerating and battling the American people on domestic soil.

Pro-Gun Control Politicians Stack the Deck at MN Senate Hearing

The first round of civilian disarmament hearings in Minnesota didn’t go the way gun control advocates wanted. Gun rights supporters showed up in force, dominating the proceedings (in a good way). Local pro-disarmament papers claimed the hearings were unfair; their guys had been “bullied” out of the room. Our sources tell us the Senate’s learned from the House’s experience and are stacking the deck. They’re handing out tickets to the Senate hearing room in a 50 – 50 split: 40 tickets for gun rights supporters and 40 for the gun control advocates. This despite the fact that over 150 pro-2A folks showed up vs. about 40 gun control advocates . . .

So the Powers That Be have made it look like citizens are equally motivated and evenly divided on the issue of civilian disarmament. The exact same thing happened in Maryland. A hearing on gun control alternated between one hour of pro-2A commentary with one hour of gun control advocacy—even after the civilian disarmament enthusiasts had long since run out and the pro-2A line was out the door.

This “fairness” isn’t “fair.” There isn’t a 50-50 split on gun rights in terms of intensity. Polls show support for new gun control measures. In reality, most voters don’t care that much one way or the other. Would they like an assault weapons ban? Sure! But they’re not going to get off their ass to do anything about it. And they sure aren’t going to use it as a litmus test for the next election.

For those of us who are about to have our property and our Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms trampled upon, however, it’s extremely friggin’ important.

What we’re seeing is the biggest push for increased gun control ever, and it’s coming at a time when more Americans than ever own guns. It’s coming at a time when the newly elected president barely got 50 percent of the popular vote against the worst candidate I’ve seen from the Republican field in my lifetime.

The things most people do care about, like the economy and unemployment, aren’t getting better, are being pushed aside for these gun control bills. And despite doing everything in their power to make it seem like gun rights supporters are bullies, they can’t rouse enough supporters on their own side to even make it a fair fight. They have to impose rules to level the playing field for themselves.

Next November’s elections can’t come soon enough. Hopefully not literally

CT Governor’s Gun Control Wish List Revealed

Just ahead of “Double Barrel” Joe Biden’s visit to the Constitution State, Dan Malloy has riled people on both sides of the ballistic fence. The Connecticut Governor has released his own slate of gun control measures, short-circuiting the work of a legislative “super committee.” “’It’s apparent to me that the legislature will not reach bipartisan consensus on this issue,’ the impatient potentate told the Journal Inquirer. “I’m always being accused of trying to play this outsized role. I’ve held back. It’s not working, and I will very shortly be speaking on this issue on a fairly comprehensive basis.” Surely the Veep’s planned visit today had nothing to do with the Gov jumping the gun. So what’s on his wish list? The usual civilian disarmament agenda—AND BEYOND! First up . . .

An expanded “assault weapons” ban (with registration), magazine capacity limits (10 rounds), universal background checks and a private sale registry. He’d also expand the list crimes that would make someone ineligible to own a firearm. Busted for smoking a joint in college? Kiss your gun rights goodbye.

The Governor would also like Connecticut to establish a pre-crime unit. Firearms dealers would be required to maintain electronic records of all firearm and ammunition sales “to better anticipate and respond to criminal activity.” And they’ll be “required to routinely transfer such information to law enforcement.”

And just so everyone knows who’s buying what, “By executive action, the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will be required to regularly report to the Governor and General Assembly on such purchases.”

As you’d expect, the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation isn’t pleased with Governor Malloy’s end run around the Assembly. They’ve released the following statement:

As the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry with a sizeable economic presence and workforce in Connecticut, we at the NSSF and our members based in the state will review Gov. Malloy’s proposals in detail. We certainly hope to have the opportunity to engage with him in a meaningful dialog to achieve real and effective solutions that will help to make Connecticut safer.

We are, however, troubled by the Governor’s apparent change in attitude and seeming impatience with the approach of the General Assembly’s bipartisan Gun Violence Task Force and even his own commission. We do not believe a rush to quick-fix legislation is likely to produce real public safety solutions, while it holds the clear potential to hurt good-paying manufacturing jobs in our state.

We applaud the General Assembly’s bi-partisan task force for working to fully evaluate all the issues and points of view, including that of our industry, in an effort to craft an effective public policy response. We hope the Governor will give the General Assembly the opportunity to get it right. We believe that is more important than achieving headlines in connection with Vice President Biden’s visit to Danbury today.

And so Connecticut’s Governor is priming the pump to drain law-abiding Americans’ supply of firearms. They’re joining New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island et al. in the rush to prevent spree killing and reduce “gun violence” by removing modern sporting rifles, handguns and standard capacity magazines from law-abiding Americans and curtailing the right to use whatever’s left. Good luck with that. Not.

Andy, gangbangers killing each other, suicides, and other gun-related crimes resulting in death aside, responsible gun owners don’t leave firearms unattended where unauthorized folks can access them, do they? I own firearms, know how to use them, and don’t leave them lying around where they’re accessible to unauthorized folks.

The .05 percent (= 0.0005=40,000/80,000,000) of gun owners being irresponsible is definitely a small percentage, but look at all the attention it brings to the other 99.95 percent of gun owners who are responsible.

I’m not telling anyone what to do–actions have consequences. Each person must live with their conscience.

Maybe the next mass murderer can be sponsored by a major newspaper or television news channel. Then they might get the details right!

NY to exempt violent TV shows, movies from tougher gun law passed after Connecticut shooting

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York sought to combat violence by rushing the nation’s toughest gun control measure into law after the Connecticut school shootings that killed 26 people, but the state is now carving out an exemption to make sure movie and TV producers can stage running gun battles on Manhattan streets.

Movie and TV productions have long been courted by New York and other states with tax breaks in exchange for the jobs and glamour of the industry. Hollywood is also a major campaign fundraising stop for New York politicians.

“We spend a lot of money in the state bringing movie production here, post-production here, so obviously we would want to facilitate that,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who wants to expand the film and TV tax credit.

He said movies and TV may use fake guns that wouldn’t be subject to the new law but the industry wants “certainty.” The revised law would allow them to use real weapons without real ammunition.

“There’s no reason not to make a change like that to give an industry comfort, especially when it’s an industry we want to do business in the state,” the governor said.

Film and television producers have spent more than $7 billion in New York since the state began offering tax breaks in 2004, the governor’s office says. New York has been the stage for recent films including “Spider-Man 3,” ”The Nanny Diaries,” ”Sex and the City 2,” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Most of Woody Allen’s films are made in New York City, and many TV shows including “Louie” turn to the city for their backdrop.

The Hollywood exemption is just one of the revisions planned for the state law that was passed in January before the Obama administration and other states offered their legislative responses to the Dec. 14 rampage in Newtown, Conn. Other changes to the New York law would allow police officers to keep their high-capacity handguns and take a loaded gun on school grounds without permission from school officials.

However, the need for a “cleanup” bill also means the fight over the law may not be over after all.

An estimated 10,000 opponents of the new law are expected to descend on Albany on Thursday to try to persuade lawmakers to take advantage of an unexpected second shot at the law critics claim is unconstitutional.

The law was passed in a flurry of closed-door negotiations, without public hearings or a three-day review required of bills under the state constitution. The measure was debated, passed and signed within hours, just days before President Barack Obama proposed his measures including tougher gun control.

“Had they not rushed this bill through, this bill would never have become law,” said Assembly Republican leader Brian Kolb. “This opposition would have been mobilized … this bill would do nothing to prevent the tragedies.”

Most opponents have rallied around a call for repeal of the law, which would be impossible to pass through the Assembly led by New York City Democrats who have long championed gun control measures. But the cleanup bill provides an opportunity for lawmakers to submit more substantive changes.

Others are considering a strategy of blocking the bill from passage, which could bolster the chances of a pending lawsuit that seeks to overturn the law.

The law bans a broader array of military-style weapons, restricts ammunition magazines to seven rounds from 10, creates a more comprehensive database of people barred from owning guns, and makes New York the first state to require background checks to buy bullets.

Therapists, doctors and other mental health professionals will be required to tell state authorities if a patient threatens to use a gun illegally. Mental health advocates are also seeking amendments to the law they say may interfere with treatment of potentially dangerous people and discourage them from seeking help.

Cuomo and Sen. Jeffrey Klein, who co-sponsored the gun control legislation, said he and legislators are only discussing technical changes at this time.
