So, last Friday, the Evil Princess says to me from her workspace across the room from mine, “Today is ‘Talk Like A Pirate Day.’”

“Arrr,” I replied, “then gimme some booty, wench!”

Turns out that was the wrong thing to say, ‘cause I pretty much got keelhauled.

Be careful with this “Talk Like (Whatever) Day” business, fellas.  As far as I know, we’re out of the line of that fire until next April, when “Talk Like Shakespeare Day” comes around.

Forsooth…the winter of our discontent may show up on April 23.

  1. On a Caribbean cruise, my son bought a T-shirt with a skull and crossbones and the caption, “Prepare to be boarded and surrender the booty.”

Most guys find it humorous. The gals, not so much.

  2. My “pirate” name is this little game of many decades is “Mad Jack the Dagger”

Tell Gail that some wenches got themselves buried along with the treasure chests…:-)

    Be safe Mas…

  3. I fear, “me matey”, come 23 April, the wench will direct you to “get thee to the nunnery, ye canker-blossom”.

Enjoy her while she still has a sense of humor.

  4. Should have asked her where her buccaneers were. If she said “on the side of my buccin’ head!” she would be playing the game right.

  5. Gadzooks! Sounds like you have a great sense of humor. Some people are too sensitive. Isn’t the point of “Talk Like a Pirate Day” to be funny?

  6. Dave-VA, no prob…while they might be off topic for this particular discussion, both your links are certainly pertinent to recent discussions here. Many thanks.

Two weeks ago today, I attended a police test/seminar/demonstration using FBI protocols and ballistic gelatin with the new round reportedly picked by FBI already for their soon-to-increase inventory of 9mms, the Gold Dot 2. I have to say it’s the most impressive 147 grain 9mm subsonic I’ve seen yet.

And as to your troll link…well, it confirms my theory that troll-hunting is not only an inexpensive and satisfying hobby, but A Good Thing for the world in general…:-)

  7. In reference to the excellent link provided by Dave–VA: Looserounds
The author refers to the 9×19 mm as the 9mm Luger. I know that as a youngster, I was confused when buying 9mm ammo as some boxes were marked as 9mm Luger and some as 9mm parabellum. A neophyte, when reading this article might conclude that these police depts were switching to Lugers as a sidearm.
The ammo nomenclature is riddled by inconsistencies. For instance, the .380 auto, 9mm Luger, 9mm parabellum, .38 super, .357 Sig, 9x19mm, 9x21mm are all 9mms and will shoot the same bullets. However, the 9mm Makarov is really a 9.2mm. Confusing, I think so. I’m not complaining, you understand, this sort of thing is what makes life interesting.

  8. I’m a machinist by trade, and I have more than once had amusing discussions with ‘experts’ on ammo caliber. Something along the lines of:

“A 9mm makes a bigger hole in you than a Three Eighty, and a .38 Special makes an even bigger hole.”

I then ask them if they are talking about things like ‘wound channels’ or ‘stopping power’ or ‘energy on impact’ or ‘just plain old how-big-around-is-the-bullet’?

    (It’s almost always the latter…)

Then I show them the decimal system, and how to convert millimeters to inches…and things become comical at that point. My wife doesn’t have the patience to draw pictures and explain things, so she just puts one of my 9mm rounds next to one of her .380 rounds, then holds them end on to the ‘expert’ and asks “Which one of these is bigger around?”
