The premier trade show of the firearms world is SHOT, the Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show.  “Our man at SHOT,” Jim Fitzpatrick, will be there each day.  The show kicked off Monday with Media Day and the gala SIG Day, when writers and buyers get to shoot the new guns.  Here’s Jim’s report.  There will, of course, be more each day this week.

My first stop of the day was at Glock as the line was already getting long, I was as able to shoot the G43X and the G48. Both of the Glocks ran well, accuracy was dead on. I like the feel of the G48, just felt like a slimmed down G19.
ProFense had this awesome belt fed .308 mounted in the bed of a Toyota Tacoma. 50 rounds per second, 3,0000 rounds per minute. The demo was quite the spectacle.
This was the mini version in 5.56
Was able to make an appearance at Sig range day, was only able to shoot a few new pieces as follows.
The new MPX Copperhead in 9mm. Another fine piece of equipment that is compact, soft shooting, and with enough capacity to keep you in game.
Sig P929 Legion in single action. The Legion series checks all the boxes. All of the Legion pistols are extremely accurate. Fit and finish is what you come to expect from Sig.
P938 Legion in 9mm and P238 in .380 Note the deep olive finish on the P238 If you desire a top notch pistol for concealed carry, these two options get the nod. I wish I could have brought you more from Sig, 40mph winds and light rain put a damper on this event this afternoon. As soon as I took a picture of the Sig Sauer sign it blew over and was damaged from all the wind.

The new Sprinfield Armory 911 in 9mm, and XDM 4.5 and 5.25 in 10mm did not disappoint. The 911 was a bit small in my hand but was manageable. The 10mm pistols shot steady and accurate. Fun pistols to shoot.

Walter’s new steel frame Q5 Match SF. Really enjoyed shooting multiple magazines through this, with a steel frame recoil was very light. Follow-up shots were fast and accurate. This pistol just feels good in your hand compared to most polymer pistols made today. Give it a test drive, I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.
This was my favorite of the day from Sol Invictus Arms in 9mm, full auto fun at it’s finest. This one was just too much fun…..

I was talking to the Winchester rep, this is the new Ranger One. 147 grain bonded jacketed hollow point. Rep said they are bringing this ammo out to compete for the FBI contract won by Hornady. Ballistic gelatin results look impressive, with awesome results in auto glass.
This 180 grain 10mm was very soft shooting out of a Glock 20, I was pleasantly surprised compared to shooting other 10mm rounds.
At last years show I was able to give this one a look, today I was able to shoot it. The Archon type B. As I reported last year, this pistol is well built, trigger and reset are crisp. Pistol ran well with no hiccups, accuracy is spot on.The overall texture is aggressive, slide is a bit wide for me YMMV.
Mossberg’s new M1C was a fine shooter, had to cover my targets with the sights, fit and finish are good. This pistol felt very good in the hand. Trigger was good. I think this one will do well in the conceal carry market. First pistol in 100 years, nice job Mossberg.

  1. Mas, what do you forecast for the future of the Glock 43X and 48 as far as law enforcement adoption is concerned? Will agencies switch to one, or make them optional for officers with smaller hands? I recommended the 48 for my nephew up in Canada as its barrel length satisfies their laws but personally I’d go for the 43.

    • I think the police market will welcome them more for off-duty and backup, but an 11-shot 9mm could certainly be a uniform option for officers with very small hands. Will depend on the identified needs of the particular agency, methinks. I was handling the 43X and 48 here at home base, and love the trigger reach dimension. Should have one o each in hand for testing shortly, for GUNS magazine.

  2. Thanks for the information.

Do you think that the introduction of Winchester Defender 10MM ammo will mean the end of the Silvertip 10MM?

    • Can’t say for sure, however all good things come to an end. New technology and materials most times, rule the day. We shall see….
