Next month in Ohio, Marty Hayes, JD and I will be teaching a 40-plus hour Deadly Force Instructor class.  For an idea of what it entails, take twenty minutes to watch this video, done a year or so ago for the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network.

Or watch video here.

We still have a few openings. Information and registration contact are available here.

  1. This course is the gold standard for education on the subject! Anyone even remotely interested in the justified use of deadly force should have this course on their radar. It is a graduate level course on every aspect of use of force law and the practical applications of same. If you teach CCW classes, you really should take this course – Ditto for anyone who is or intends to become a use of force expert.

If you are also interested in aviation history, an added benefit to this particular location is that it is close to the outstanding National Museum of the US Air Force in Fairborn, OH. Schedule an extra day for that side trip if you decide to go – it takes a while to get through all the exhibits.

  2. The real life, factual basis for the lawful use of deadly force was specifically why I took MAG 40. For me, and I think for most, whether consciously or subconaciously, knowing the criteria for when to deploy skills in defense of your life frees-up the motor skills and abilties which allow one to prevail in a deadly force encounter. Removing the doubt of “when” allows freer application of equipment and skills because it removes deadly doubt and hesitation. Learning the justifications and applying them in situations daily cements what a condition color code looks like and why. Applying the three-legged stool of AOJ, being able to explain why you should or shouldn’t take action, and constantly re-enforcing the criteria is a life-long pursuit which keeps one’s mind in the game. It is not, nor should it be, a casual passtime. That notion was also something I took away. And I take it seriously to this day.
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. Mas is a national treasure.

  3. You make a comment to the effect that teaching is a learning experience for the teacher. Very true.

(In the 1980’s/90’s I taught the H&R Block “Learn to prepare income taxes” course in several different offices. Teaching definitely made me a better preparer for regular clients.)

  4. This is a wonderful course, on a necessary subject. I believe every gun owner needs to know self-defense law, and to keep informed on political issues relating to the Second Amendment. Certainly, anyone who carries a gun needs to know all the relevant laws.

My only lament is that such knowledge is required in a “free” country. There are people who want to own guns, but not get involved in politics. There are people who want to own guns, but not study self-defense law in depth. There are people who don’t want their brains to focus on “how will this look in court?! How will this look in court?!” when they are in condition orange, and are thinking about whether to put their hand on their gun or not.

Sadly, before the 1960s, hunters and other gun owners could afford to ignore politics and be somewhat ignorant when it comes to self-defense with firearms. Now, that is unwise. In anti-gun jurisdictions, there is no presumption of innocense when a gun owner defends himself. The government presumes the gun owner did something wrong, and the government will dig until they find something to prosecute. They don’t like victims who are prepared to shoot back.

Happy Independence Day! May God bless and protect President Trump and his family!

  5. Damn. You finally have a course reasonably near to me and between my age & the to do list, I’m not gonna be able to make it.

The need to research your own states laws is most wise. It’s amazing what you can find in both the Code/Statute books (there’s generally some relevant case law cited there) and in case law you can find in a local law library. You can find some outstanding examples of how NOT to act in case law.

A question: back in LFI days you offered a tape/DVD of your use of force lecture. I’ve got one of each, but the tape has bit the dust. Does MAG have a similar product?
