A few years ago when my book “Greatest Handguns” came out from the Gun Digest people, we did this interview explaining what the selection process had been.

Obviously, such choices would be largely subjective, but the interview went to the objective part. The book turned out to be so popular that we did a second volume, to include the great pistols and revolvers that had been “left on the cutting room floor” from the first volume.

Both are available on Amazon: Volume I here and Volume !! here.

And I still stand by the choices.

  1. These are two of my very favorite firearms books. I bought each of them years ago when they were first published & I have enjoyed reading them ever since then. They are extremely well written & well illustrated, resulting in books that are both informative & fun to read. As the owner of several of the handguns included in these volumes, I particularly appreciate reading about the history behind them & the innovative features of their designs. I highly recommend them to everyone who is interested in handguns. “The Gun Digest Book of Sig Sauer” is another one of my favorites. Now that I have been reminded, I’m going to get them out & read through them again as they are perfect for summer reading.

  2. Perfect timing. I just started “Book of Pistols and Revolvers”, updated by Joseph E Smith – Seventh Edition, copyright 1968. The index starts on page 809. Also received the companion “Book of Rifles” – as gifts from a local museum that closed down recently. Your selections will be newer of course, so I guess I I have no choice. Looking forward to them.

    • Admittedly the Raven wasn’t the greatest pistol, but it always fired when I owned one. About the best you could expect for $37.50 at the time.
