Backwoods Home Magazine is a quarterly 116-page homesteading magazine written by and for people who desire to pursue a self-reliant life. Each issue contains seasonal articles on building, gardening, canning, cooking, alternative energy, livestock, foraging, and preparedness. In nearly every issue of BHM, there is one article on firearms and one on politics. BHM was founded in 1989 by Dave Duffy in his garage. In 2019, after a one-year hiatus as a digital-only magazine, Dave’s son, Sam Duffy, brought back the print version.

I took advantage recently and purchased the usb stick that has almost 30 yrs of articles and what not – such a great resource to have at your finger tip – and space saving !

These are by far my favorite magazines! Good printed magazines are a rare find today, especially those with very few ads stealing valuable space. That’s why I gave them to my son and his wife for Christmas. And they love them! It’s exactly what they need as they prepare to start their transition into the homesteading life. Thank you for maintaining the old fashioned (and what I believe to be far superior) way of communicating; a tangible publication I can reference for years to come.

I love the magazine except for the gun information that is in every issue. Especially important to me are the recipes and questions to Jackie. I have had issues with making elderberry jam and I found a great solution from Jackie. Very valuable.

I think I started reading Backwoods Home in the early 1990s. Back when that, Countryside, and Mother Earth News were about all the magazines you could find regarding homesteading. While I’m no longer reading the latter two, and though we’ve been doing this long enough (and I’ve written for other publications on many topics) that it’s a “been there, done that” sort of thing, we thoroughly enjoy BWH. A magazine that both my husband and myself read front-to-back is a rare find. Keep doing what you do, and let’s all work to inspire younger generations to live this lifestyle.

I read lots of magazines for an hour every morning while drinking my morning coffee. I judge them all by the amount of time their on the table. Some last a day, other two or three days. I got my first Backwoodhome about a month ago…………it’s still on the table.

Lot’s of information in both magazines. Backwoods Home includes articles on firearms as well, while Self-Reliance does not. Both magazines have highly informative articles wrote by knowledgeable people. Some articles even disagree with others that have been wrote and published, which is perfect for critical thinkers.

Subscribed to magazines like this since the late 1970’s as they have been a wealth of information for anyone seeking a more independent way of life, or want knowledge on not only new and different ways to do things, but also learning how the generations before us could accomplish so much with so little. A simpler way to live, and THIS magazine has resisted the temptation to fill more pages with ads than articles! I just subscribed to Backwoods Home Magazine (and Self-Reliance) after seeing The Hollars talk about it on YouTube, and I’m already so glad I did! I have only received my first issue of Backwoods Home so far, and it’s awesome—way bigger than I expected, and full of super relevant information for where I’m at in life right now. You can really feel the heart and care that goes into it. I’m excited to keep reading and learning more!
Been a subscriber for probably close to 20 years now. It’s the ONLY magazine that I still pay to get. When I first subscribed, I could only dream of having my own “Backwoods Home”. Six years ago, that dream became a reality!
Haven’t read the Self Reliance one yet but so far I love Backwoods Home. 100% recommend.
Although the newsstands have other magazines of the same theme they seem to be written by writers and not doers. We do not live in the country or have livestock, but we have a garden and make our own bread and food preservation so every issue has something of value for us.
So real. Like real food for life. Just the first copy and love it. I appreciate the lack of adds and hope you guys go for ever.

Change nothing. I am so glad the physical copies were brought back into production. I found out about Backwoods Home Magazine from listening to one of Bill Cooper’s Hour Of The Time radio broadcasts from the 1990’s around 15 years ago God rest his soul. If it wasn’t for his radio show I doubt I ever would have found out about BHM. I subscribe to both magazines and although I am delighted that the digital version is also available, I will always favor the physical issues. Thank you so much Duffy Family and contributors for starting this magazine so long ago and keeping it alive to this day! God Bless you all

I have been a Backwoods subscriber since 2004 and Self Reliance subscriber since it’s inception. I have met Dave, Lenny, Don and most importantly, Jackie!! (maybe others) at a couple of self reliance home shows in Denver. I feel they all are family and frequently ask Jackie for advice via her website.
We have renovated a very old ‘rustic’ cabin in the mountains and our 1955 house in Denver, installed solar on both, learned how to handle weapons, gotten great suggestions on gardening and preserving food, all from your wonderful and helpful articles. I look forward to every print issue. And I’m finding that now, looking thru old issues on Kindle, articles that I now find very helpful to present situations where before i just glanced at them! Truley timeless information.

I purchased a subscription after seeing it on the vlog, The Hollar Homestead. My friend is starting gardening and chicken raising this year and I wanted her to have good information to help her. I’ve been reading Backwoods Home magazine for at least 25 years. I let my subscription lapse during a busy life-season but have recently picked it back up. There’s no other magazine that I’ve ever read that has so much information on so many practical subjects relevant to my life. I’m newer to Self-Reliance magazine but am thoroughly enjoying it as well. Jackie Clay, especially, has taught me so much over the years and I use what I’ve learned from this magazine every year as we cycle through gardens, birthing and caring for our animals, replenishing our soil, food preservation etc.
I find both magazines to be informative regarding how-to, DIY advice for rural living. (Caveat: I’m NOT a doomsday prepper, nor do I have any interest whatsoever in that. I believe in self-sufficiency and rational preparedness though, living in an area prone to extreme weather.) I appreciate practical advice on homesteading that doesn’t rely on going out and simply buying a new tractor and every attachment.

You never know when something you read will cause the penny to drop in some unrelated area of life. I do not have a homestead but love this magazine. It’s full of recipes, facts, canning, building and taking care of animals and so much more. Ruthann Zimmerman did a video on this magazine and I had to sign up for it. A great thick magazine filled with a lot of information for everyone.

I have been a subscriber to this magazine for a long time. It is filled with practical and down to earth information and practical hacks. I have eliminated several of my magazine subscriptions but will not allow this one to ever run out.
Both magazines are great. I look forward to reading these two magazines and have learned so much from the topics in them.. They just give me great information about subject matter that could someday be very useful to me even though I do not live on a farm.

I have cancelled several subscriptions but not these two! I find myself scanning in articles for future use. We live on a small acreage, and occasionally get motivated to do one of the projects in the magazine (I get both) and always learn a bunch about what we could be doing and sometimes get inspired about something we knew nothing about. I would say either publication is well worth it for the treasury of lore and info available therein, especially if you utilize the articles available on line for your specific interests. If I had to choose one, I’d go with the original Backwoods Home, because of the firearms-related contributions by Massad Ayoob. Protecting your “ranch”, big or small is a critical concern, eh?
I gave a gift subscription to a neighbor, a young fellow starting on his homestead journey with goats and sheep. He and his family love it! I’ve given many gift subscriptions over the years (since 2005) and will continue to do so! Thanks for such a great publication.

We have subscribed to Backwoods Home & Self-Reliance magazines for years. We also purchased the entire back issue anthologies. Even though we have homesteaded for years, we still learn new things and also enjoy every issue that is mailed to us. It’s perfect for beginner, intermediate and advanced homesteaders!

I subscribed to BH many years ago when I had a country home and absolutely loved it. I am old now with limited mobility and live in a more urban location but share BH with anyone I think would appreciate it. My brother got a new home on 3 acres last year so I gave this subscription to him for his birthday. He was thrilled and loves it too.

My husband prefers Backwoods Home and I love Self-Reliance. They both offer so much valuable information, especially in the world we live in today! I think we have incorporated at least one thing from every issue we have received of each publication! It is also so nice to have a written resource as opposed to depending on the internet for everything.
This magazine and the sister magazine, Self-Reliance, are the only two print magazines we still subscribe to. Not only do we subscribe but we read them cover to cover and keep them in our library for future reference. These contain great articles written by people who are actually living the life. And I love the cover art!
Super packed with all kinds of interesting articles and info! My husband and I grew up in families who taught us nothing as far as these life skills are concerned and we have chosen to escape the city, move to the country, and homestead as much as we learn how to. This magazine is amazing! Worth every penny! Plus beautiful and captivating pictures and we love that it’s in print for us to touch, feel, and smell the pages (vs reading from the internet). Backwoods Home is an investment. These magazines have so much practical information and plenty of interesting articles. The only way this magazine could improve is to become a monthly publication! Buy a subscription for yourself and buy gift subscriptions for your family and friends so you don’t have to loan out your copies and risk never getting them back.

It’s very comfortable reading the articles in these magazines – I can tell they’re written by normal friendly people trying to make their way through the hard work of building their lives in a more self-reliant way, and I feel like you can really relate to them. The recent article (Q1-2024) about counting the cost of living in a trailer while building a house (and doubling any estimate of how long it will take) could have been ghost-written by my daughter and son-in-law – almost everything that happened to the couple who wrote the story has happened to my kids, so it was very relatable. I just wish they’d had a chance to read it before they started building:-)
Oh my! I have received my first issue and read it from cover to cover. There is so much information within the pages of this magazine. There was a special section on Elderberries. I’m going to try the recipes since we have many Elderberries that grow wild. This is the type of magazine you save for years as a reference. For anyone on the fence about ordering, DO IT!

I used to get this magazine digitally for years. When I decided to gift it for my daughter I did it in hard copy format. I loved it so much that I switched to the hard copy version myself. I have been a subscriber for at least a decade and I have always found new information and articles that inform and educate. In this day and age of inflation, worries about big agriculture practices and self reliance, this magazine is pure gold. I am 80 years old and was born and raised in farming country of the twin tiers of NY and PA north of Wellsboro PA. So I learned a lot while growing up BUT wow is Backwoods Home Magazine an awesome teacher. I guess I didn’t learn all I thought I did.
I’ve been reading Backwoods Home, and the associated blogs, for at least 15 years. The contributors are knowledgeable. The articles are varied, well written and informative. I greatly appreciate that the magazine is mostly content, with only a small amount of advertising. I really feel like I’m getting my money’s worth with Backwoods Home.
I save every copy of both magazones that I receive. I so look forward to receiving them. The information is phenomenal and I refer back to old issues on a regular basis.
I love this magazine. I enjoy all the articles in it yes even Ayoob on firearms. I own a pistol myself but he is informative on of alot of diffrent guns. The recipes are good everything about this magazine is some kind of information that is new to me. I’m a country girl and thought I knew oretty much but there is always something new to learn and your magazine dies just that. I’ve just recently subscribed to the Self Reliance magazine hoping it will be just as informative. There are some “opinions” and articles I may not agree with but I always look forward to sitting back and enjoying my quiet time every time I get my new issue.

Love both magazines! I’m stuck in an urban hive for assorted reasons, but they let me visualize a more rural future. Many of the articles serve as primers to common aspects of homestead living (or at least the ideal version), and the writers clearly do their research and are living the lifestyle they write about. There’s also a variety of recipes included in each issue, and the ‘Country Moments’ photos never fail to bring a smile to my face. I’ve not only kept my own subscription going, but also bought gift subs for friends so they could enjoy it as well. Highly recommended.
