Odd chicken egg

I got the craziest egg today. It is perfectly round, only the size of a yolk and the shell is very thin. Is there a reason a hen will lay an egg prematurely? Is this something to worry about? And should I pitch it or use it?

This is just one of those things — some blip in the hen’s reproduction cycle. It’s nothing to worry about and you can certainly use the egg. I got a rippled, lopsided egg the other day that made us all laugh. I think the hen hiccupped when forming it! — Jackie

  1. My daughter’s supervisor raises chickens for eggs. She broke an egg into a bowl, and heard a plop. In the bowl was not only a yoke and egg white, but another, smaller egg, shell and all. It also contained a yoke and white. She knew the first egg was large, but presumed it was a double yoker. When I told a neighbor about that, she said she can remember once having such an egg when she was a little girl, and her mom had cracked it open. What would cause this, I don’t know, but what an April Fools joke that would be on the would be cook.

  2. Hee Hee, we have one hen who regularly lays torpedos instead of eggs. Very long and skinny and especially pointy on one end.
