Digging out after the storm
Thursday, February 14th, 2013After two days of plowing, moving snow, and plain old shoveling, we’re pretty cleaned out after our snowstorm. And Will got our snow blower, which was still behind the storage barn, started and out where I can use it. That’ll be a big help for the next big one. We didn’t even use it last year! Like Dad always used to say, “Too soon old, too late smart!”
Because of the storms, we have had fantastic sunsets. Take a look at the one I shot the night before last. It looked like a huge fire shooting right up into the sky. Awesome!
I promised a picture of my canned Hopi Pale Grey squash, so I’ve included it on this blog. It turned out great and I can’t wait to do more.
You folks who are waiting for HPG seeds, they’re drying and should be ready to mail by the end of the week. Hang on. They’re coming! — Jackie

Oh wow, I have never seen a sunset like that. And what’s even better it there is not a house in site to mar the view. Beautiful!

Gorgeous sunset for sure; we watched the same sunset from Michigan’s Eastern U.P., looking west across the Straits of Mackinac. A spectacular sight. I wish we’d had our camera.

Beautiful pictures, Jackie. I received my Hopi Pale Grey seeds and want to thank you again for them. I had no idea what the C. Maxima meant in your letter. I found myself on a quest to find the meaning and it’s importance in preserving my seeds. You sure have opened my eyes to a whole new world outside of growing crookneck squash and zucchini! I can’t wait to plant my seeds!

C. Maxima refers to the species of squash. If you plant more than one of that species, the varieties will cross. There’s much more information in issue 129 of the magazine in my article, SAVING SEED. Once you start saving seed, you’re quickly addicted….and saving tons of money on seeds too!
