I usually begin making out seed orders before this, but because I’ve been so busy, it just hasn’t happened. I have to start planting peppers the second week of February so they’ll be ready to go out into the hoop house in early May. I’ve made out orders for a few new peppers and tomatoes that we’re going to try this year. We do that every year and always discover new “favorites,” often among old heritage varieties. I’ve got a pile of seed catalogs around my chair that would bury an elephant! How much fun. But there’s so much difference in price, seed count, and shipping that it’s gotten to be a chore, too. I used to buy a lot from Johnny’s, but their shipping got so high that I could no longer afford it.

I forgot that I’d promised to show a photo of my favorite Vietnamese market basket. Sorry guys. So here it is. I totally love it! And it’s more than 30 years old too. I can carry it on my head (soft enough to conform), to keep the weight from hurting my back, I can rinse vegetables like carrots, right in the basket and they drain dry in minutes. It fits in my large sink so I can rinse green beans and lettuce right in the kitchen. If you can find one, buy it! — Jackie

  1. Jackie,
Another thing. Maybe you can explain this to your readers better than I
can. Dave it looks like in the new Backwoods Home has an articule on the
Apoclaypec. Back in the day when Y2K was to happen and this idea works
alot bettter when the end is suppose to be time. Or in other words if a
terriost attacks, we don’t know when that will happen.
But we were told to do our laundry. than after all your cloths are clean,
wash out your washing machine with bleach water. the bleach will kill any
germs and also take out any soap suds. Than I put the wash water thousght the rince cycle, Then I fill up the washing machine and you have
drinking water. And if nothing happpens, like Y2K didn’t happen, you still
have clean wash water for the next load.
But I am not sure if any of you can use this idea.
    Blessings,
    Debby

  2. Last Saturday I was in town doing a few errands and stopped by Ace
Hardware. The one here in Mt carries alot of things the big box stores don’t.
But there seeds were out. I know that the big box stores do carry seeds and the ones that I got were not Heirloom, but they were 13 cents a pkg
They were like 8 pkgs, for a $1.00. I am sorry but I could not pass that one up.
But any way I am not sure if Ace Hardwares in other areas would do the
    same.
    Blessings,
    Debby

  3. I saw you mentioned how expensive shipping from Johnny’s is getting, and I wanted to let you know that usually at the beginning of the year, they have a coupon code that gives you free regular shipping. It can only be used once per customer, but I usually order all my seeds in one order anyway. This year the code is 12-1005. Just put in my order!

  4. Joyce Pierce,

I love to fish and with about 200 lakes within half an hour’s drive from here, I’m ashamed to say I haven’t taken the Ugly Stick out of the package. My son, Bill, who grew up fishing with me, bought it for my birthday last July. I PROMISE you both I’m buying a license this year AND wetting a line. Sometimes life gets too busy when you’re not looking.

  5. Jane,

I do order some things from Pinetree, but I also buy a few seeds here and there that they don’t offer. I LOVE variety in my garden so much.

  6. i see you have an ugly stick beside you, please tell me you are going to take an afternoon or a day and go fishing.

  7. I go through a great big stack of seed catalogs too! Even if I’ve never ordered from a particular one, they’re fun to look through when the snow is blowing and cabin fever sets in.

  8. After comparison shopping, I found that Pinetree Gardens has the best prices. Their catalog is a little hard to use, though. I’ve found that baskets are definitely useful in the garden. Not just quaint decorations.
