So what did Will and I do? We took a drive along the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the Echo Trail. We’d talked about doing this for two years now, and Will surprised me yesterday morning by whisking me away, not even saying where we were headed. What a surprise! We explored wild lakes, saw moose tracks, a Bald Eagle, ate wintergreen berries, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the day. Even when you work hard, you need a little time off once in a while to avoid homestead burnout — sometimes even we forget that. I’m so glad we went!
Oh, by the way, I set a trap for the turkey/chicken-eating fox and caught the bugger. The poor thing was just skin and bones. It must have had something wrong with it as there is plenty of wild prey out there. Our cat, Mittens, catches several voles, mice, and other critters every single day. I felt sad to have to trap it, but I sure sleep better at night now.
So glad that you and Will found each other..What a wonderful way to spend your day..Your sharing your life with us is such a reprieve from this, sometimes, hard life..Thank you…MA
Hi. You most likely did the fox a favor if he was that thin. He most likely had internal issues and I’ll bet that was why he was picking off your turkeys. It was probably an easy catch and if he was sick, he wouldn’t have the energy to go after wild game. Just a guess…I work at a Veterinary Hospital and have done wildlife rehab so I’m going on a hunch. Don’t feel bad :)
The Echo trail is a great little drive. You probably drove right by my hunting shack. It is 9 miles south of Buyck on Cty road 24. I have many fond memories of the Echo trail. My dad and I harvested a 1200 lb. bull moose with a once in a lifetime tag, 14 years ago this week off the Echo trail a few miles south. The meat was tremendous. I wish I could do it again!
…and you didn’t offer us any!!! Glad you got away to relax a little. It really is important. Now, about the Bahamas….:-)
Looks like a fun trip.
Hope you are enjoying your Subie . . . I really like mine. You will enjoy it even more this winter, I predict.

Glad you had a great mini holiday! Always good for the soul.
Mmmmm haven’t had wintergreen berries since I was a young girl—-many many moons ago. can just taste em
Thanx for the trip down memory lane, I’ve spent many wonderful summer vacations in the BWCA! Haven’t been in many years and your story was a pick- me- up!
Happy to hear you had a wonderful day away. Your husband sounds like a wonderful person. Nice to hear about your live it gives Me a boost.
Karla,
No, we couldn’t do anything with the pelt. Fox pelts are not nice this time of year and that one’s was horrible. Not mangy, but ragged from summer bleached hair.
Jackie
Beautiful!!! Looks like a very nice ‘day off’. So nice to have one of those now and again.
Too bad about that marauding fox, but at least whatever it was suffering from it’s not suffering anymore, and your critters are safe. Can you do anything with the pelt?
