Tomato-starts

Spring MUST be coming soon, isn’t it? Anyway, today it’s sunny and mid-thirties after six more inches of snow. A warming trend is headed for us but so is another winter storm. (Maybe it’ll miss us?) My tomatoes and peppers are doing very well in their mini-greenhouse in the living room. In the greenhouse behind them amaryllis bulbs I got on a closeout sale are beginning to bloom. I bought them after Christmas and now they’re blooming their heads off. And with all the snow outside, it’s a welcome sight, for sure.

Amaryllis

David’s motor on his car blew up so we’re madly trying to deal with that and still get him to college every day (a 60-mile round trip). He’s driving his old Geo with crossed fingers and plenty of prayer, hoping it will hold out until we can get his car back on the road. The good news is that the used motor is on the way and maybe can be put in by the weekend. Or the next week… CARS!

It’s so nice that Will is out with Old Yeller on the beaver flat, cutting some of the standing dead ash for firewood, for next year. There’s still lots of snow and I know it’s a lot of work trudging through it to load the wood. So I’m fixing a good pork chop and roasted vegetable supper for him tonight. — Jackie

  1. Wally,

I’ll do that. Will does plow a road out with the dozer, including turn-arounds and loading areas. We have so much snow he got stuck with the dozer out there the other day. Luckily, he was able to use down-pressure on the blade to rock up out of the snow. He uses the dray sled to haul in about a cord at a time. Right now he’s hauling little standing dead ash in to use in the kitchen stove next winter (or the next…)

  2. gen,

Yes, I think of Mom every time I see flowers blooming or I look through catalogs. I always think “Mom would love those…”.

  3. The amarylis is beautiful! We keep an eye on your weather and felt so bad hearing that you had more snow! Ours is finally almost gone with just a light dusting early Saturday morning. Hope the warm days come your way soon!

  4. After a day of wood cuttin’, and/or machinery twitching, it is a pure pleasure to be home with loved ones, especially if said loved ones prepare a fine supper for the laborer.
I like it, & I’m sure Will does too.
    Bless ya girl…

  5. It would be fun to see pictures of firewood being harvested and getting hauled up. You must have to plow roads for the dozer. How much snow do you have in the woods?

  6. I hope you don’t mind my comment, but seeing that Amarylis reminded me of how you talked about your mom, and her love of flowers. I bet she would have loved seeing these in bloom.

  7. Cindy,

I got my amarylis at WalMart a couple weeks after Christmas. $2.50 each. But I carefully opened boxes to make sure that they weren’t shooting up leaves as that indicates no blooms, just leaves that year. The bloom is a fat bud coming way before the plant leafs out. So I chose ones that had no leaves starting to show or buds just starting to poke out of the bulb.
Yeah, I know. But we’re supposed to be starting to warm up AND we just dodged another big storm with over a foot of snow. We got only a dusting. Thank God!!!

  8. Hi Jackie!! I really like your set up for the growing plants. How organized!!! The Amaryllis are beautiful!! Where did you get them? Some stores around here didn’t even carry them this year! They sure are pretty!! By the time those beavers show their faces it will be July!!

  9. I love your blog! Wish you were here – it`s 85 today & sunny. My husband is breaking ground – fruit trees, forsythias, & daffodils are in full bloom – clothes are hanging on the line. All`s right with the world. Spring has finally sprung.
