GMO seeds
My wife and I are trying to get a good supply of non GMO seeds for seed saving. We went to local areas and got heirloom seeds and plants and then heard that they might still be GMO. Do you have a recommendation as to the best place to get guaranteed non GMO seeds?

Chances are very good that the heirloom seeds you bought locally are not GMO. In fact, very few garden seeds are…yet. One exception is sometimes sweet corn as GMO field corn pollen contaminates a lot of otherwise heirloom crops. I really love Baker Creek Heirloom seeds and Seed Savers Exchange. Both only carry heirloom seeds and test for possible GMO contamination. Their seeds cost more than those at the big box stores, but you get quite a few seeds per pack and a huge variety. Once you start your own garden, with a little care you can then save your own heirloom seeds from many different crops so you’ll have seeds for the future at NO cost. And that’s good news, indeed! — Jackie
Canning butter
Have you ever processed canned butter in the oven instead of water bathing? I was told that you could fill hot clean jars w/solid butter, place in 225 degree oven for 20 minutes. Remove, add any additional butter to fill, replace in oven, and cook an additional 45 minutes. Jars will seal as they cool.

Oven canning is NOT an approved method of processing food. The term “oven canning” has been used lately by folks who seal dry foods, in canning jars, in the oven. But this is not really canning, just a method of sealing jars. — Jackie
