The wise voice of Emily Miller is heard again in Washington, DC.  Check out the following, and be sure to watch the video all the way to the end…

The deputy mayor says, with the camera recording, that it’s better to allow yourself to be injured than to fight back.  If you start shooting, he says, you might hit an innocent bystander.

It’s not even on the deputy mayor’s radar screen that the great danger to innocent bystanders comes from armed robbers…who, if they have been neutralized by the gunfire of law-abiding armed citizens, can no longer endanger bystanders OR intended victims.

If this office-holder is a spokesman for modern urban ethics, it is no wonder why so many American city-dwellers look longingly at the Backwoods Home lifestyle and values.

  1. Read this a few days ago, unbelievable.

“It is much better, in my opinion, to be scared, to be frightened, and even if you have to be, to be injured, but to walk away and survive. You’ll heal, and you can replace whatever was taken away.”

I’d love to hear how he suggests we heal from a permanent injury like paralysis. Or how we replace our life or the life of a loved one. I suppose another loved one maybe?

  2. Hopefully, this Idiot will be the first to suffer when he encounters such a need for self defense situation.

  3. I thought I’d save folks the digging I had to do to find his contact info:

    Paul A. Quander, Jr.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety & Justice
    The John A. Wilson Building,
1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Suite 326
    Washington DC 20004
    (202) 724-7173

  4. Why does anyone think that inner cities are nobody but the (overwhelmingly) dirt-poor who lack the choice of living elsewhere and a (very few) rich? It’s because the quality of life is so poor in them – including their political elites’ attitude towards crime victims.

  5. Oh my God Mas, I can’t believe I just heard him correctly. He honestly believes that it’s better to be held up at gunpoint, robbed, and POSSIBLY SHOT, than to be able to fight back. How do people like this make it into office? Are the people of D.C. so used to drinking the Koolaid that even something as insane as this man’s comments have no affect on them? I’m so troubled by this video that I’m actually having trouble formulating my comment here. Wow.

  6. Wouldn’t be a problem for citizens if every cop in D.C. (and everywhere else) didn’t enforce unjust statutes. Like the requirement to have a permission slip from a man before one can exercise a God-given right.

But they do. They know who butters their bread.

  7. If we write to the Deputy Mayor, let’s all remember to be polite and reasoned. Anything that can remotely be seen as a veiled threat, and you can be sure he’ll be reading it aloud at a press conference to defend his ill-considered remarks.

    best,
    Mas

  8. That’s “just plain wrong”. How dare a victim kill or injure their assailant? There needs to be a new entry in the upcoming DSM-V psychiatric manual for the Deputy Mayor’s “mental disorder”.

  9. Did you mean to refer to the reporter, Emily Miller, rather than Harris? Or did I miss something? It wouldn’t be the first time.

As for DC politicians: The people get the politicians they deserve, and apparently the majority of those who vote deserve the very worst. Really now, what do you expect from people who re-elected a crack head whore hound to be Mayor?

  10. I’d bet a six-pack of anyone’s favorite brew that Quander has armed guards around the clock.

  11. Mas your right, a polite email to help sway opinions is the way to go. Folks in this nation need to step up and participate in our political system and help educate our fellow citizens in office if we are to initiate change in opinions. The good citizens that live in communities such as the Deputy Mayor need to vote with their feet and move someplace else. There are too many people that think self reliance and self preservation is some type of mental illness, so we need to take the high road and use intelligent, logical dialog to prove otherwise.

  12. “Against stupidity the Gods themselves contend in vain.”

You can’t convince a person like this of anything. It is kind of like their arrogance is proportional to their lack of intelligence. They know they a right and you can’t convince them otherwise.

The only thing that is going to work is a conservative pro Second Amendment takes over Congress and the Executive branch and flushes the turkeys who a running and ruining DC out.

  13. I suspect that two things (at least) are at work here. The politicians, such as this gentleman are elected and re-elected because of their party affiliation and not on the ‘content of their character’ by an effectively uneducated, uninterested and largely ignorant electorate. The second factor is that those who want to armed, criminals certainly and citizens who are willing to be so even if in violation of local statutes (thereby making themselves into criminals too), are.
D.C. has become pretty much a cesspool from the very top (the federal government) on down and is no place to live and raise a family. This is only a small part of the problem.

  14. I would like to add a note to my previous comment. I believe that most of the people are effectively uneducated due to the failure of contemporary public education to educate. Our schools have become little more than cultural and informational wasteland meant primarily to warehouse children while they are propagandized into little mind numbed robots. Those who rebel become criminals, those who conform… lawyers perhaps.

  15. I’ve encountered this attitude before. Few politicians have the brass to come right out and say it. I suspect that this guy knows his city well: there are probably few cities better suited to saying something like this and not taking flak for it (maybe Bloomberg’s NYC).

I remember reading a somewhat similar argument by a famous feminist (Betty Friedan? I can’t recall for sure). She opined that we have a duty to society to never resist because resistance “perpetuates the cycle of violence”. I always wondered how an adult of even average common sense could think that way. I figure that nothing “perpetuates the cycle of violence” more than a violent dirtbag being able to commit his heinous acts with impunity.

  16. People have voted on the inner cities – “voted with their feet,” that is. Not just “white flight” – but middle-class flight of ALL races; that’s why Washington now has middle-class black suburbs.
With almost no exceptions, big inner cities have lost their middle classes – of all races – due to poor quality of life, very high living costs for everyone except the poor, and “let them eat cake” politicians such as the one you quoted who neither understand nor care about the realities the middle class must live in.

  17. Following this government parasite’s advice, one should not fire a gun in self defense because the firearm may blow up or a ricocheting bullet could strike the shooter, or maybe the projectile will miss the attacker and hit an airplane, causing it to crash into the crime victim.

An earthworm has a higher IQ than this politician, if he actually believes what he said. More likely, he’s just a blatantly lying, anti-gun Marxist crony of our benevolent Dear Leader.

  18. Thank you for this post, Mas, and thank you participants in this forum for a reasoned discussion. The Deputy Mayor’s philosophy on self-defense is bizarre to say the least. Until the electorate of the District become fed up, nothing will change.

  19. Mas and Friends:

    I am flabbergasted.

Historical comments frm a pantheon of American heroes :

Captain John Paul Jones – fighting the British ” I have not yet begun to fight”.

Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry- fighting the British ” Dont give up the ship”

Colonel William Barrett Travis – fighting the Mexicans ” I will never surrender or retreat”.

Major General George Pickett – fighting the Federals ” General, shall I advance?”

Lieutenant General U S Grant – fighting the Confederates ” I intend to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer”

President Theodore Roosevelt – fighting the terrorists ” Perdicaris alive or The Raisuli Dead!”

Gunnery Sgt Dan Daly – fighting the Germans ” Come on you S.O.B.’s, you wanna live forever?”

CDR Ernest E. Evans – fighting the Japanese ” this is a fighting ship and I intend to take her in harm’s way…”

President Ronld Reagan – fighting the terrorists “… you can run, but you can’t hide…”

2012 DC Deputy Mayor Paul A. Quander – fighting the criminals of DC

Don’t fight back “… give them what they want, you walk away, you live and you survive…” and “… it is better in my opinion to be scared, to be frightened and even if you have to be, to be injured…” than to use a gun.

He is a smooth, polished politician, constantly protected by armed guards, living in a secure bubble. He is willing for you or a loved one, to take a beating, or a bullet at the hands of vicious thugs, because he is uncomfortable with YOU being armed. You see, he is afraid you might hurt someone. He is a moral coward, and he wants everyone else to be one too.

Absolutely revolting – but take heart, his words will be forgotten when men still remember those others.

    Regards

    GKT

  20. I am forced to wonder if Mr. Quander utilizes armed police officers as a protection detail? Or private bodyguards? A typical double standard for someone of his ilk.

Perhaps we should start a fund to help Mr. Quander to emigrate to (formerly) Great Britain? The attitude he espouses would be very readily received by those currently running that country into the ground…

  21. Let’s hope this goes viral; he will just ignore any contrary comments. His self-absorbed arrogance is too complete.

  22. …and you should never consider owning or operating a motor vehicle because you might go off the road and cause loss of life and property damage…

  23. Heh since the DSM-V was mentioned, my wife recently dropped an Abnormal Psychology class after the professor said something to the effect of “people who worry about perceived crime and violence have a phobia and are paranoid”.

It’s unfortunate when you have public officials recommending citizens simply lay down and die. The analogy of crime to cancer is pretty fitting. The treatment is harsh but it’s better than the alternative. And prevention is ever better.

  24. I have been to the boundry of DC several times. I refused to disarm, just to say I had been there. Pretty sad when the Deputy Mayor does not support armed self defense. DC has relaxed it’s laws some, but they are not there yet!

Almost every state has a good carry law. Only the state of Illinois and DC do not have a way to protect your self with a firearm.

    This will change!

  25. As Orwell is know for saying….all of us are equal, but some of us are more equal than others.

More-equal in brains, more-equal in hypocrisy, more-equal in political connections.

  26. Babylon on the Potomac …

Am I the only one who considers Washington, D.C. as the current incarnation of Babylon?

    Revelation 18

1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,

10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,

13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.

14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,

16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!

19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

    22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

  27. Well, I found the answer to my question:

Personally, I really don’t care who is king of Babylon next year …

  28. Boy!!!

I should have done this before asking my question!

    Google “Babylon on the Potomac”

  29. The tact this politician advises is the same policy we were told to follow with airline hijackings pre 9-11.

    Obviously, that did not work.

What does work without question is citizens fighting back.

There is a guy in Chicago, Derrick King a street person , who asked Jennifer King for a cigarette (google the names). When she refused, he kicked her in the head senseless till she required something like 30-40 stiches and thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills. It ruined her life. I don’t think she ever fully recovered.

You take the politicians advise, the animals take over. It’s better to fight on our feet then live on our knees.

King was quickly released from jail and he has been arrested two or three more times for assault.
