Well, what can I say that hasn’t already been said – I love the magazine – the down home vibe – great articles that educate and inform –
These are by far my favorite magazines! Good printed magazines are a rare find today, especially those with very few ads stealing valuable space. That’s why I gave them to my son and his wife for Christmas. And they love them! It’s exactly what they need as they prepare to start their transition into the homesteading life. Thank you for maintaining the old fashioned (and what I believe to be far superior) way of communicating; a tangible publication I can reference for years to come.
Great magazine, I love the old world lifestyle articles, it reminds me of a simpler time in this country. It makes me want to go back a hundred years to a simpler time.
love this magazine, so informative and wealth of info.
LOVE these magazines . . sure wish some of the other publications could be mailed to Canada.
These are the greatest magazines in the world! Being in Canada, I have to pay extra for postage and the exchange rate but still see them as high value resources. If you want to be able to persevere when the economy goes bad or another pandemic hits, you need these in your library.
I am thankful to Mary Shrader, Mary’s Nest, for introducing me to your magazine, Backwoods Home. I have only recently subscribed to Backwoods Home magazine, fall 2025, and read it cover to cover. I was so inspired I subscribed to your sister magazine Self-Reliance. Your magazines are worth every penny, filled with recipes, a wealth of homesteading guides & skills as well as valuable history homesteading information. I now have a dedicated space in my reference bookcase for Backwoods Home and Self-Reliance. I look forward to future issues and highly considering investing in your past issues.
Can’t remember the last time I had a magazine subscription that was a genuine pleasure to find in the mailbox. Im new to the sub after hearing about it on True Grit Appalachia on YouTube so I got a deal as well. Im always into learning new and old school stuff and Backwoods/Reliance take care of this nicely. Have recommend to all my friends and family that lean toward the more outdoorsy homestead view of things. Excellent value and looking forward to my next issue!
Love it
I LOVE this magazine!!! We save them for future reference… We’ve learned so many things through this magazine and have become inspired to try other things too… Thank you very much!
I’m from a farming / fishing / seafood industry family background and I always loved knowledge about doing things “the old way” or the “country way” and that’s what you get with these magazines. Great information.
On the recommendation of a friend a few years back, I decided to subscribe to both Backwoods Home and Self-Reliance. Both are excellent magazines full of useful information. I read every issue from cover to cover.
Great magazine, true grit YouTube channel got us hooked on this, best thing we have ordered
I really enjoy Self-reliance. Very interesting articles.
Get at least this subscription for both magazines and never cancel!!! These are a joy to read and I only wish I had a library full already! I tell everyone I know about these if they are at all inclined to this lifestyle. I also love to give subscriptions as gifts!
Love these magazines, I have renewed a few times and plan on continuing to renew.
My mother ordered Backwoods Home magazine for my husband and I and we loved it so much that we ordered Self Reliance as well. We look forward to their arrival in the mail and enjoy the many articles that are not only educational but also entertaining. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I totally enjoy this magazine and agree there’s never enough of them!!! I am not as fond of the Backwoods but I prefer one with no guns and no politics.
My fav magazine! I am pleased with this and the various subjects and information shared! I I like this a lot better than the other mag bec the other one that is political and has guns in it, I don’t care for that as much. I am a big time canner and gardener.
Like a old friend just talking about country living and how to make your life matter.
Awesome magazines! They are great resources, references, and entertainment. I love seeing them arrive in the mail.
Lot’s of information in both magazines. Backwoods Home includes articles on firearms as well, while Self-Reliance does not. Both magazines have highly informative articles wrote by knowledgeable people. Some articles even disagree with others that have been wrote and published, which is perfect for critical thinkers.
Thank you for a GREAT magazine! I read them front to back then start over sometimes! I enjoy the variety of different things! It’s a very well thought out Magazine! I’m learning new ideas also! Keep up The Great Work!
Thanks for a very informative magazine! W.H.G.
I have simply lost track of how much I have learned through many articles. There have been numerous articles providing information on things I learned many years ago. My “learned” information is sometimes “old school” or, if one prefers, simply out-of-date. The articles have in some cases provided me with information that ultimately saved me money. There are things that I have wanted to accomplish, but was not certain of the necessary steps. Suddenly with a new issue there is an article with invaluable information explaining those very steps. My home computer is filled with notes on various subjects that were presented in articles. I look at my notes before adventuring into a new project.
There are some articles that may not be something in which I have great interest. A little knowledge is always helpful. Those articles are very likely answering many questions for many people.
I honestly look forward to each and every new issue. I always when I just received the magazine read the Publisher’s Note and scan the features and departments. There is always various articles that I have to read. I look forward to every issue.
Great magazine filled with wonderful and very helpful articles! We same them in our library for future references!
I of course have noticed you guys first on holler homestead! But when my aunt offered her first magazines for me to read I said yes and enjoyed them so much I subscribed for 2 years and have already recommended them to 2 friends who have the same interests I do. One commented how there are no ads! Enjoyable articles and a great read. Thank you for putting out quality content!
Awesome reading , informative articles. I am eagerly awaiting next issue.
Loved reading through my first edition of your magazine. Very interesting articles.
I just subscribed to Backwoods Home Magazine (and Self-Reliance) after seeing The Hollars talk about it on YouTube, and I’m already so glad I did! I have only received my first issue of Backwoods Home so far, and it’s awesome—way bigger than I expected, and full of super relevant information for where I’m at in life right now. You can really feel the heart and care that goes into it. I’m excited to keep reading and learning more!
Haven’t read the Self Reliance one yet but so far I love Backwoods Home. 100% recommend.
This magazine is great. It has a ton of ideas that are very useful. It is money well spent.
Although the newsstands have other magazines of the same theme they seem to be written by writers and not doers. We do not live in the country or have livestock, but we have a garden and make our own bread and food preservation so every issue has something of value for us.
I love both of these Magazines so much!! They are a great source of information and fun.
We have a 500+ acre farm in southwest Virginia and your magazine has been a treasure trove to me for most of my 70 years. Keep up the great articles and I would like to read more about farming. We have 65 head of beef cattle, and I did have chickens up until last fall and thought I was going to have knee surgery so we sold the birds, less work for hubby. We have honeybees, bass and catfish ponds. We’re hunters, rifle and bow, and keep our freezer full in the winter months with venison of all kinds. Surgery is probably still an issue in the next five years and in the meantime I want to start off again with birds but ducks and turkeys for eggs and meat. I read my magazine from front to back and save them for referring back. We heat our home with woodstoves and have plenty of forested timber to keep us warm in the winter. We make maple syrup and apple cider and I can everything I can get my hands on.
Very good information. We’re saving the magazines in our library for future reference material. Maybe even the grandkids will be using these to help enrich their lives.
I love your magazines, they are both informative regarding so many different topics. You do not need to be a homesteader to read the magazine, I am not and yet I love your magazines. They are informative on rural living and canning and extreme weather. I enjoy reading them both when I receive them.
Change nothing. I am so glad the physical copies were brought back into production. I found out about Backwoods Home Magazine from listening to one of Bill Cooper’s Hour Of The Time radio broadcasts from the 1990’s around 15 years ago God rest his soul. If it wasn’t for his radio show I doubt I ever would have found out about BHM. I subscribe to both magazines and although I am delighted that the digital version is also available, I will always favor the physical issues. Thank you so much Duffy Family and contributors for starting this magazine so long ago and keeping it alive to this day! God Bless you all

I have been a Backwoods subscriber since 2004 and Self Reliance subscriber since it’s inception. I have met Dave, Lenny, Don and most importantly, Jackie!! (maybe others) at a couple of self reliance home shows in Denver. I feel they all are family and frequently ask Jackie for advice via her website.
We have renovated a very old ‘rustic’ cabin in the mountains and our 1955 house in Denver, installed solar on both, learned how to handle weapons, gotten great suggestions on gardening and preserving food, all from your wonderful and helpful articles. I look forward to every print issue. And I’m finding that now, looking thru old issues on Kindle, articles that I now find very helpful to present situations where before i just glanced at them! Truley timeless information.
Thank you!
I love your magazine!! I have read most of the last one that came out.
The content in these magazines is excellent! It is refreshing to have such great resources in print.
I received one of the magazines so far and love it. It is definitely one that will be read and re-read. God Bless!!
We ordered for a Grandson. His subscription was just received. As far as our son could tell, it was well received.
I love the wealth of knowledge these magazines have! I plan on keeping this subscription for years to come.
Love the gardening info and the recipes!
Very good. Only put it down 3 time before I finished It. looking forward for the next issue.
I used to subscribe to both these magazines, and when we moved in 2021, I didn’t renew. I have missed getting these every month! Full of great information
Love these magazines. Practical and useful information presented in a readable and useable format. My entire family reads through them consistently.
I am getting both Backwoods Home and Self-Reliance magazines. These are so informative and I have learned so much. Love all the articles and stories. Its the only magazines I read cover to cover. I always refence back to the magazines if I need to. Can’t wait for my next issues. I am so glad I found these. Love love love them!
I subscribe to both Self-Reliance and Backwoods Home magazines and have for several years now. They are the best ones in this area and I always look forward to their arrival, especially when the USPS doesn’t tear them up trying to get them to me!

I find both magazines to be informative regarding how-to, DIY advice for rural living. (Caveat: I’m NOT a doomsday prepper, nor do I have any interest whatsoever in that. I believe in self-sufficiency and rational preparedness though, living in an area prone to extreme weather.) I appreciate practical advice on homesteading that doesn’t rely on going out and simply buying a new tractor and every attachment.
Really enjoy this magazine. Easy reading with lots of information. Things new to me and not-so-new but adopting the things I find useful for myself. I do share many of the articles with others who have an interest in the subject matter. So many people depend on the computer for their information, but that’s not like sitting by the wood fire with a good paper document. Keep it up.
What invaluable publications! Wish I had known about these years ago. Thanks to RuthAnn at Homesteading with the Zimmermans for informing her viewers about Backwoods Home and Self-Reliance. While we don’t have livestock or a big garden, we employ many other aspects of homesteading and a traditional foods kitchen. Even the articles that don’t directly apply to our version of homesteading are impactful and interesting to read. Who knows – maybe livestock and a big garden are in our future. Therefore, I’m saving each issue for my resource library. Keep up the great work!
I find this VERY interesting reading. Love the articles and recipes. Love the information. Love to gift this to friends.
Both magazines are great. I look forward to reading these two magazines and have learned so much from the topics in them.. They just give me great information about subject matter that could someday be very useful to me even though I do not live on a farm.
I love your magazine! I look forward to continuing to learn and be more self reliant.
Very good magazine, I have learned a lot from it, well written.
always nice to have, got helpful hints and information..
I am a 77 year old country kind of woman. We live on a farm. My husband and I have been married 60 years coming up in a couple of months. I follow, on You Tube, a young lady by the name of Ruth Ann Zimmerman from Homesteading with the Zimmermans. She introduced her subscribers to these two wonderful publications of yours. I am thrilled with the content and work that goes in to these two wonderful publications. I even got a special container to keep my new found favorite magazines stored in on my shelf. Ruth Ann was right on the money when she suggested these publications as being well worth every dime. I love them!
Something for everyone. Love the homestead advice, the gardening tips, the recipes and articles on how to keep animals! Looking forward to getting the next edition.
I love both of your magazines and look forward to them! The articles are great and my husband loves the gun articles. I’ve also gotten several of your books, Jackie’s canning book is one of my top 3 canning books. Thank you so much for continuing these magazines. I save every one for later reference.
We live on a small acreage, and occasionally get motivated to do one of the projects in the magazine (I get both) and always learn a bunch about what we could be doing and sometimes get inspired about something we knew nothing about. I would say either publication is well worth it for the treasury of lore and info available therein, especially if you utilize the articles available on line for your specific interests. If I had to choose one, I’d go with the original Backwoods Home, because of the firearms-related contributions by Massad Ayoob. Protecting your “ranch”, big or small is a critical concern, eh?
Your magazines and books are so helpful. Look forward to getting them to read
These magazines put mother earth news to shame. They are great in every aspect. Helps those trying to learn. I told a friend here about it and she loves it too. She raises peacocks. She is looking into getting bee hives too. My wife loves it too. Everyone i show it to, loves it instantly. I want to get Three Bears to start selling your publications. Thank you for providing this super great materials.
We have subscribed to Backwoods Home & Self-Reliance magazines for years. We also purchased the entire back issue anthologies. Even though we have homesteaded for years, we still learn new things and also enjoy every issue that is mailed to us. It’s perfect for beginner, intermediate and advanced homesteaders!
Great magazines, I always look forward to the next issue. Keep up the good work, Thanks
I started with backwoods in the early 1990s. I enjoyed it very much and now continue to enjoy it and have just started self-reliance and look forward to reading them both. Iam glad the Duffy family is carrying the tradition on. I look forward to seeing the new people they will bring to the magazines also.
I am now on limited income and have cut back on some magazines, but not this one, absolutely the best info w/interesting articles relevant to my lifestyle!
Long time subscriber, thank you for publishing. Love your authors, old and new, Massad Ayoob, John Silvera, Jackie Clay, Patrice Lewis and all the others make for very good info. I have been “living the life” for a long time but usually find many bits of help in every issue.
So far, so good. This is only the first issue we’ve recieved and it arrived ripped. Looks like lots of useful information inside, however.
Thank you! The magazine is very helpful and enjoyable.
My daughter brought these magazines back from New Hampshire to Vancouver WA. I love the “old fashioned” feel to the designs and the practical how to essential tools which used to be handed down through family. When technology goes down I’ll be glad to have these magazines to reference. Cheers
Love Backwoods Home!
Received the first issue of Self-Reliance and, for me, it was so-so.
But, I shouldn’t rate the magazine on one issue.
I just received the second issue and the articles sound interesting.
My husband prefers Backwoods Home and I love Self-Reliance. They both offer so much valuable information, especially in the world we live in today! I think we have incorporated at least one thing from every issue we have received of each publication! It is also so nice to have a written resource as opposed to depending on the internet for everything.
I love the wealth of knowledge these magazines have! I haven’t received one that I didn’t like. I plan on keeping this subscription for years to come.

I love both magazines. They are very informative and I keep each addition. Thank you.
I love the articles and information in this magazine! Truly helpful advice and ideas!
I love this magazine and also Self Reliance Magazine!!!!! It has changed my life and my whole way of providing for my family. I HIGHLY recommend it whether you are off grid, a homesteader full time or a hybrid homesteader. Excellent content for many different categories. A great resource.
Backwoods Home and Self Reliance magazines are the only magazines I still subscribe to. There is so much useful information shared in the magazines that there’s something for everyone. I hope for many many years of publication to come.
I was looking for the perfect gift for my parents and this is it! They absolutely love it, and can’t wait for it to arrive.
Wonderful magazine with detailed and immersing reading material. Definitely a 10/10.
My wife and I look forward to receiving each new issue. From the jokes, to gardening, to useful homestead tips, your magazine is a wealth of useful and interesting topics. I ordered a subscription for my son and his family. He loves it too!
It’s very comfortable reading the articles in these magazines – I can tell they’re written by normal friendly people trying to make their way through the hard work of building their lives in a more self-reliant way, and I feel like you can really relate to them. The recent article (Q1-2024) about counting the cost of living in a trailer while building a house (and doubling any estimate of how long it will take) could have been ghost-written by my daughter and son-in-law – almost everything that happened to the couple who wrote the story has happened to my kids, so it was very relatable. I just wish they’d had a chance to read it before they started building:-)
Just got my first issue of the magazine and I Absolutely love it. So much interesting things in it
I love Backwoods Home magazine and have used a lot of the advice within their articles. The magazine is practical and well written. The issue of Self Reliance which I received recently, seems to be geared more for a suburban or apartment dweller, and I find I want to return to Backwoods Home – which they have graciously allowed me to do. I have nothing negative per se with Self Reliance, but found more of my particular rural needs addressed in Backwoods Home. Thank you for a great publication!
Love the information in both these magazines
Articles are interesting and easy to understand
Liked it so much, bought gift subscriptions as well

Your magazines are the best out there.
Raised by Norwegian immigrant family who literally homesteaded in log cabins and were purebred Guernsey dairy farmers in SE MN. You guys got it right and continue to add to my knowledge. These were Christmas gifts for my granddaughter and her intended as they are intent on this living style. Bless you!!
Enjoyed it look forward to getting more….
I really like Backwoods Home and Self Reliance magazines. You can read these magazines and learn many things you didn’t already know and learn more about things you did know. They also make you think. The only bad thing about these magazines is the fact that they aren’t enough issues per year.
We love the magazine, it keeps us close to our homesteading vision, teaches us new things and takes us back to a time once forgotten.
I stopped other subscriptions because your magazines are simply the best.
As a person of a certain age, I feel right at home within the pages of Backwoods Home. I learn something in each issue and I always look forward to the illustrations
I save every copy of both magazones that I receive. I so look forward to receiving them. The information is phenomenal and I refer back to old issues on a regular basis.
Easy to read, great resource. Highly recommend. Have had a subscription for 3 years and going.
I’ve never been so excited to watch for a magazine come in the mail..! Thank you for the quality writing and content.. keep em comin. 🤗
Very informative information! So nice to find such pertinent information in these magazines.
The simplest way I can put it is these magazines are full of a wealth of information. If the internet every crashes these magazines will be worth their weight in gold.
Love both magazines! I’m stuck in an urban hive for assorted reasons, but they let me visualize a more rural future. Many of the articles serve as primers to common aspects of homestead living (or at least the ideal version), and the writers clearly do their research and are living the lifestyle they write about. There’s also a variety of recipes included in each issue, and the ‘Country Moments’ photos never fail to bring a smile to my face. I’ve not only kept my own subscription going, but also bought gift subs for friends so they could enjoy it as well. Highly recommended.
Fantastic magazines that are good reading. Glad to see it return to print a few years back. This is a must have subscription as far as I’m concerned.
I love, love, LOVE these magazines!
Best, most informative magazines I receive. I read them from cover to cover the moment I receive them. Wish they came out at least every 2 months!
Mary
Our whole family looks forward to receiving the Self-reliance and Backwoods home magazines! The articles are very useful and interesting. The children’s favorite thing is the joke page! We wish there were more joke pages. Overall it’s a great magazine!
We Love both of your magazines!! We look forward to them coming. They are ready from front to back many times. I have used many recipes and enjoy all.

Great information and useful topics! We save each issue of Self-Reliance and Backwoods Home to refer to later.
