We were until I came upon some of my photos taken in June! My gosh, the colors just knock us out after a winter of drab and white. Now I really can’t wait till spring.

We’re planning and ordering some interesting new seeds. As always, we look for beautiful, tasty and often Native heirloom varieties we can grow here in Zone 3. Already we’ve found some new-to-us old beans, squash, corn, and others. David’s girlfriend, Ashley, can’t wait to help out in the garden as she’s never had the chance to garden before and just loves all things “homesteady.” We have a lot of fun together.

Our warm weather has cooled and is heading back to normal for January. As long as I’ve lived in Minnesota — more than thirty years, in all — I’ve never seen a January thaw before. What a nice surprise that was! And it lasted nearly two weeks in what is usually the very coldest time of the year. Spring seems a lot closer even though I know we’ve still got a lot of winter ahead of us. (But, hey, we get to plant our peppers and petunias next month!)

I’ll be canning up some ground beef next; dozens and dozens of pints. It’s so easy to put up and so very handy to have around. I season some for tacos and leave other plain for a variety of mixed recipes. We just love having that pre-cooked burger handy for quick, homemade meals. — Jackie

  1. Yes, I do very poorly with lack of sun – cranky and depressed! But luckily, its time to start a few seeds, so the bottom set of two 2-bulb wide spectrum light units is reserved for me to lay under for an hour a day. Lets just say I pray no visitors stop by during that hour, because I have to expose all my skin! (hehe) Its bad enough that the dog stands there staring with his head cocked, wondering what in the world I am doing!
When I was still working downstate in the city, would spend every lunch hour in the botanic gardens greenhouses or a commercial greenhouse – that works like a charm, too.

  2. Your pictures are lovely and so uplifting!! Thank you for sharing. Yes everything is so drab right now. We had a lot of ice this year in WI. I am most greatful we had that January thaw too to get rid of a lot of the ice. But I’m sure February will bring us back to reality.

Maybe the beavers should recheck before the ground hog gives his report next week!!! haha

  3. Miss Jackie, I too long for spring time and the garden. Have been longing over seed catalogs. I save a lot of my own and as I am not looking to sell any will likely make only a handful of new purchases.
WOW!!!! the red Lupine is wonderful, beautiful (I could wax eloquent here)!!!!
Anyway I love it….I too love peonies, but fault them for having only 1 bloom period. Someone would make a fortune on a cut and come again series if that were genetically possible….Alas I am no Luther Burbank. I grow a nice group of dahlia, canna and marigold because I love a long period of bright bloom. Can’t wait!
