Pomegranate molasses

How can I can pomegranate molasses?

Pomegranate molasses is just sweetened, cooked down pomegranate juice, so it is easy to can. Just bring to a boil then ladle out into hot jars. Half-pints or pints would work best. Process for 15 minutes in a boiling water bath canner. Then you’ll have jars of pomegranate molasses on hand to add to your favorite recipes or use as you like. — Jackie

Humane euthanasia

Today we have a different and painful question: how do you humanely put to sleep a faithful dog, cat, chicken, etc? It is a question we wrestle with. We do not want a vet that doesn’t even know the animal do the job for us. As vegetarians we have never butchered or hunted. Also, where do you get antibiotics?

I do take dogs and cats to our vet when there is no alternative but to put them to sleep. But I hold the pet in my arms while the vet administers the IV so there’s only love, not fear. For farm animals, it’s usually a .22 bullet to the head; quick and fear-less to the animal. Not pleasant for us, in any form, though. Believe me!

I get our injectable antibiotics from our vet and some through our local farm and ranch store. Also some farm catalogs such as Hoegger Supply Company and Nasco Farm & Ranch carry them. I buy some antibiotics through our area farm and ranch store. — Jackie

  1. An expensive option is to find a vet that will come to the house to put the animal down. In the case of cats I have done this because I don’t want the last thing they do to be a terrifying trip to a place they hate.

  2. To D.K. – I’ve taken several pets to the vet to put down. Like Jackie, I always hold them while he gives the shot. It’s very peaceful and they truly do just go to sleep.
