Canning with Splenda

Have you done any canning or preserving with Splenda or any other sugar substitutes? Just found out we must make a lifestyle change for a family member. I have always canned.

Yes. My late husband, Bob, was diabetic and could not use sugar. You can substitute Splenda in pickle and fruit recipes, using about the same amount of Splenda as if you were using sugar. But I really didn’t like the Splenda in jams and preserves. You can use Pamona’s Universal Pectin with it, however, in place of regular pectin products. Or you can just make jam with no Splenda and Pamona’s. — Jackie

Separating chicks from other chickens

I recently purchased 7 hens and 2 roosters. We built a nice coop and yard and they are doing great. I have a hen setting right now on 13 eggs last count. I am going to separate her off from the other hens tomorrow because they keep laying eggs in her box. Anyway my question is when the chicks are hatched should I keep the hen and chicks separate from the other chickens? Maybe a small pen in the big pen? What do you recommend?

It’s a good idea to keep a mother hen and her chicks apart from the flock, especially if the yard is rather small. The other hens could injure the new chicks or they could fall into the water and drown. When they get feathers, they can usually join the flock successfully. — Jackie

  1. Margie,

Yes, you can use Stevia for sweetening. I’m pretty excited about using it in place of artificial sweeteners.

  2. Can you use Stevia for sweetening? The more I read about Splenda, the more I’m not sure it’s a good product to use. Personally I had some bad reactions to Splenda, so using other sources.
