Sweet and Sour Cabbage

1 small onion, sliced
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup water
4 cups red cabbage, shredded
2 tart apples, cored, peeled, and diced
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon allspice
2 whole cloves


Heat butter in a Dutch oven or pot. Add the onlion and brown slightly. Add the water, then the cabbage, apples vinegar, sugar, allspice and cloves.

Cook until cabbage is almost tender.

Serve hot.
