R & R

I’ll admit it: Ever since deadline, I’ve been avoiding my computer. This issue was grueling for me. I’ve needed all week just to get my house back in order, tame my wild children, and feed my half-starved man.

To catch up a bit–the dress I started a few weeks ago to wear to the Marine Corps Ball is still hanging, partially completed, in my sewing room. The pattern is lovely, but the dress just needed “something” and I didn’t have time to think about it or work on it during deadline. So instead, I looked thru my closet and found this dress I made a couple years ago (for a Ball we ended up not attending) that just needed a little finishing work. I finished it, we looked fabulous, I forgot my camera. Sorry.

The yellow/gold dress will still go on to become a real, finished dress, just maybe not one fancy enough to wear to next year’s Ball.

Right now my children and husband are all napping, so I’m taking a bit of a break. I starched some linens earlier, to use on Thanksgiving Day. We’re expecting to feed a few of the younger Marines in Erik’s unit, so I’m planning to cook for an army, as they say… though that’s really not right, because you’d never say an army of Marines… But anyway, we’re going to stick to the basics this year, just lots of them: turkey, cranberry sauce, rolls, greenbeans, yams, pumpkin pie (Jackie Clay’s recipe is the - best - ever!), stuffing, and some good brewski.

What *is* the collective noun for Marines? Army definitely isn’t right, but what is? :)

Sorry to hear your yellow-gold dress is in the UFO pile, I’m sure it will be lovely when it’s finished. I’m trying to dig my way through my own UFO/mending pile now in preparation for a move in the near future (although exactly when or where I don’t know - I guess being in science is a bit more like your travelling life than I’d imagined!)

Hope you have a wonderful and stress-free Thanksgiving.

An ASSEMBLAGE of Marines is probably the best term to use for casual gatherings, or when you’re not sure of the official structure of the group of Marines at hand.

My husband probably has some better input on this topic, but he’s off making his SECTION earn their Thanksgiving break (the small group of Marines he’s in charge of, around 20 men).

Annie, that dress is stunning! I knit and crochet but I cannot sew a straight line, and I have a nice Viking. I am thinking of taking a class if I can find one that will fit into caring for our 4 kids. My husband is in the Air Force, and I know they joke about being the only branch of the military devoted to brewing coffee, but they serve too. Bless you for supporting your Marine and bless him for serving this country.

I just recently subscribed to the Backwoods magazine and found this website and all the blogs. I must say this is wonderful. One thing though, where did you learn so much for being so young? I will definetly go back and read all the archives and thank you again for blogging. It is great to see a woman’s touch on this webiste. Please, please thank your husband for his service to our country 1000 times over, I am a Marine veteran as well. Tell him Semper Fi and keep up the great work. I will be reading your blogs everyday and trying new things as well. Hope you and your family stay well in these troubling times.
