I shudder thinking how every day that goes by this country is speeding up its decent into oblivion much like a whirlpool, the longer you spin around the vortex, the closer you get, and the faster you go till near the end your going so fast and spinning so much there is no hope of getting out of it.
This is grooming conformity blatantly.
To use a “Joker” quote from the first batman movie:
One of these days, a bunch of steroidal idiots are going to do this and discover they’ve been hung out to dry as “terrorists”. It would be so easy.
Scenario: Cops attack school bus and kidnap unwitting kids (check). Other cops “rescue” the kids. “Perps” killed while resisting, now conveniently unavailable to defend themselves. “Investigation” shows that a “rogue subset” of cops went bad and had registered a new Internet domain in Officer Dupe’s name and created a website advocating violence in the name of [radical gun-toting, Bible-clinging, anti-goverment libertarians]/[Islamic jihadists]/[neo-Nazi white supremacists]/[insert current media boogieman here] (sound familiar, like a DHS ICE fed we’ve heard of recently?). Weapons used turn out to be “illegal” arms the officers stockpiled through innocent department-sanctioned personal purchases (again, sound familiar?)
If I still wore a badge, I wouldn’t get near one of these “training exercises” without eleventy-hundred pounds of signed authorizing paperwork, and more friendly witnesses than would fit on that bus.
Bear – I realize you’ve given up writing, but this request still stands. :-)
To write an alternate sci-fi scenario: Rogue paramilitary “enforcers” over-run a region of the country, challenging the authority of that current government. They hold a school/town hostage [for whatever reasons] which provokes some ‘radical gun-toting, anti-government libertarians’ to rescue it and take out the paramilitary group – while starting a rebellion that ultimately leads to downfall of the government (possibly in a second book).
Pat– Been there, done that, didn’t sell. See Net Assets for a variant of that scenario.
Besides, the supersonic hovercraft launching spaceships into orbit was more realistic than “brave libertarians fighting rogue statists in a new revolution to bring freedom, rainbows, and unicorns for all”. The rogue enforcers already have overrun communities (you did check out the SWAT exercise story, right?). This crap has been going on for decades. Since no one strung up the cops after they kidnapped that busload of kids, or noticeably objected to the War(s) on Drugs/Terror/Global Warming/Privacy/America, I doubt they’ll start now. They haven’t even figured out that voting out the Dems and replacing them with Reps in one election, only to vote out the Reps and put the Dems back in — lather, rinse, repeat ad infinitum — doesn’t actually do anything.
We’ve got plenty of “anti-government” novels out there. Very, very few people read them. Only a tiny fraction of the readers pay for them (I get about one donation of significantly less than the bookstore price of my books for every 3,000 downloaded… and yes, people really are still downloading the books at a rate of 5,000+ per year). I don’t really see the point of doing more.
Sorry, Pat, but I can’t afford enough groceries to keep me eating long enough to write one more book no one wants, much less two. You could peddle the idea to a better author that people actually want to read (Williamson, Ringo…).
Heck, I’ve got a draft how-to article, with photos, on homemade fabric dyes that I can’t even bring myself to finish up and post.
It may not hurt to ask, but getting asked is pretty damned annoying after a while. I well and truly fucked up my life trying to be a writer and freedomista despite convincing evidence that I’m not good enough, and I can do without the reminders (and prompting to screw up more) of something I damned well know.
The obvious answer, for anyone who really wants to prevent such abduction and terrorization of their children is:
Don’t send them to government “schools.”
Besides, this sort of “terrorism” of the innocent is (at least so far) relatively rare, while all the rest of the insane indoctrination and intimidation, emasculation and dumbing down goes on each and every day, in EVERY government “school.”
Keep them at home, or send them to real school elsewhere.
In another stunning development… a society takes another step towards the abyss. I truly am stunned by this; perhaps I’m much more naive than I thought. I really wish the terrorist ill. The astounding thing to me about the video is that everyone seemed to think this was a good learning experience. Since there was even a grandstand, I have to wonder if the parents of those on the bus hadn’t been informed in advance. Otherwise, they could raise hell, but they couldn’t if they had consented to this. And their children may not be mature enough to go against them.
