Yet another reason to hate winter
Wednesday, January 19th, 2011So…I’m sitting here working away in my nice, warm office. Martha has gone food shopping.
My cellphone rings. She’s back and in the driveway.
Our driveway is next to our dining room windows, so rather than lug the groceries around to the front or back door, we just pass the bags through the window.
So I head downstairs, pull up the blinds, unlock and raise the window, then the storm window. Martha hands me up a bag and her purse and goes back to her trunk for more.
As I wait, I glance at my car and notice an odd shadow on the roof, which is covered with wet snow from yesterday’s storm. It takes me a few seconds to realize what I am seeing.
The snow that slid off the roof of the house at some point yesterday has caved-in part of the car’s roof. More than half of it is dented up to an inch and a half deep.
Fortunately, my auto insurance will cover it. Except for the $500 deductible, of course. Homeowner’s insurance? Sure, it would cover the deductible if it were not for it’s own $1000 deductible.
Really, now. Does anyone still wonder why I hate winter so much?

Climb into car’s backseat. Sit. Push up until a sort of “thoonk” popping sound is heard.
Exit car. Go have a drink. Don’t ever again worry about the car’s roof; it’s too unimportant to matter. It’s just sheetmetal.

I tried that, but the car’s “ceiling” and the layer of insulation between it and the roof would not flex enough.
However, as I was driving the other day, I heard that “thoonk.” I pulled over to investigate and found it had popped back on its own, probably thanks to the heat from the sun expanding the metal.
I still hate winter, though.
